Sega Drive (Genesis) Mini 2

On June 3rd during a livestream event, Sega announced the new Sega Drive Mini 2 which is set for a Oct 27 2022 release date in Japan. There is no word yet on a North American or a European release. We expect a similar price point to the previous model, which sold for $79.99 at retail.

Sega is promising 50 games with this release, spanning from both Genesis games and Sega CD, along with Sega arcade games. The Sega CD games include Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Virtua Racing, Thunder Force 4, and Popful Mail. The collectors out there know that a copy of Popful Mail can run anywhere from $400 to $800 depending on condition and completeness. This is an exciting addition to the mini console’s library. They are also including Shining Force CD — an excellent RPG that is also costly to purchase in today’s retro gaming market. Sega also mentioned games that are “mysterious new work.”

A little Sega CD add-on will also be available for purchase for about $35 – $37 but will be for aesthetics only — it won’t add any functionality/games. It also has a little model Sonic the Hedgehog CD for added looks. The Drive (Genesis) Mini will also sport a model Virtua Racing cart in it to complete the look.

The major concerns as far as a North American release are possible lack of interest for a physical console in the American market, supply chain issues, and licensing issues that can affect what titles we could receive.
